LGBTI+ Gozo, has said it is “concerned at the current sexual health situation in Gozo, which we feel is in a dire state.”
The organisation made the remark in reaction to the Parliamentary question asked by PN MP Claudette Buttigieg on Sexual health services in Gozo.
The organisation, in a statement, said that it realises that there are “limited, or no sexual health services offered in Gozo – with no clear plans for any future improvements, and has been lobbying for this matter since 2015, but as yet no improvements have been noted.”
The Gozitan organisation added that it is also aware that the service provision at the GU Clinic in Malta has also stagnated. While congratulating the staff “for the work they carry out within the limitations of the resources available,” it said that it is “unacceptable that in 2020, Gozitans are still considered as second-class citizens.”
“We question the answer given by the Deputy Prime Minister,” with numbers increasing of patients seeking help. LGBTI+ Gozo called for an open dialogue with the Gozitan civil society on the subject at hand.
It pointed out that sexual health care is not only an LGBTI reality, but one that affects every Gozitan. It is therefore unacceptable that in 2020, any Gozitan who, by right, tries to access sexual health care services, is referred to Mater Dei.
LGBTI+ Gozo concluded that “when there is political will, Malta has done wonders. It is time to step up once again, and invest in both Maltese and Gozitan sexual health care: to offer the best primary health services to all.”
Conclusively, LGBTI+ Gozo said that it “shares its support to the Black Lives Matter movement and current Trans*hate speech and will keep on working to have an inclusive Gozitan society.”
