The Water Services Corporation, in a statement today said that it welcomed the news that Malta has once again topped the ‘European Bathing Water Quality’ report, with 97.7% of bathing water considered of excellent quality.
The Corporation said that it is “delighted to contribute towards this high standard through its infrastructure and the sterling effort of its workforce.”
Giving details of Malta’s sewage system, it said that 67 million litres of sewage is treated a day, and 24 billion litres is treated a year. There is 1,545 km of sewage collection network.
WSC advised that there are 104 sewage pumping stations across the islands and 4 treatment plants, manned by 82 workers. In total there are 132 workers on the sewage network.
The Corporation added that in addition to the already extensive infrastructure, it is currently executing EU part-financed investment that would “allow it to keep excelling at its tasks.”
“Major sewage pipelines are currently being upgraded, sewage treatment technology is being boosted with state of the art technology, and its discharge monitoring technology will be given a radical overhaul,” it said.
The Corporation went on to say that this will be done through the use of state of the art equipment that will be in a position to detect foul play on a virtually live automated basis.
CEO Ivan Falzon stated that, ‘the results published are a certificate of gratitude to the dedication and efforts of WSC personnel in managing water systems to benefit the environment around us.’
The Corporation reiterated that the sewage infrastructure is “very complex and delicate and that such infrastructure is damaged through the improper use of the urban sewer system. It is, therefore, crucial that only human toilet waste and degradable toilet paper are discharged in the system.”
