The `Slow Streets’ initiative launched by Transport Malta and the Association of Local Councils to promote the use of sustainable means of transport in town centres, has been welcomed and supported by Malta Public Transport.

It added that “the firm backing by the government and the majority of local councils is a welcome sign of the collaboration that is required for the initiative is to be successful.”

Transport Malta explained that the project will increase the number of pedestrian areas in various localities and will encourage the use of sustainable transport.

An agreement has been signed by Transport Malta with the Association of Local Councils, who will be forwarding their proposals for this project.

The project is expected to help safeguard the environment,improve air quality and the quality of life, TM said.

Local councils in Gozo and Malta will start closing off some of the roads and squares in their localities, where residents will be able to walk or cycle safely, has well as hold activities, in a project which “promotes sustainable mobility in consultation with residents and businesses.”

Konrad Pulé, General Manager of Malta Public Transport said that “this is a very important initiative that will leave a positive impact on people’s quality of life.”

“We are confident that with adequate planning, our public transport service will be able to further compliment this initiative by offering safe and clean transportation to the community,” he added.

“While Malta experienced less polluted and quieter streets, the coronavirus pandemic demonstrated just how efficient the public transport service can be when it is given space within which to operate.

“The past months have shown that when sufficient road space is provided for public transport, the fleet is able to operate at maximum efficiency, lowering journey times by up to 15 minutes per trip during peak times,” continued Pulé.

Malta Public Transport encouraged all stakeholders to support the Slow Streets initiative “for everyone’s benefit.”

In Gozo the participating Councils are: Fontana, Ghajnsielem, Gharb, Munxar, San Lawrenz, Victoria and Xaghra.
