This morning little Jenna the turtle was released back to the sea during an activity held at Hondoq Bay in Gozo.

Jenna was rescued in March after she was found in Marsalforn entangled in fishing ropes, nets and other debris. She was cared for by by the Nature Trust – FEE Malta Rehabilitation Team until she was strong enough for her departure.

A group of Globe Students who attend the Gozo College Middle School gave a presentation to those present this morning on the importance of keeping the sea free from waste, particularly single-use plastic.The activity was attended by Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri and Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Planning Aaron Farrugia.

The Gozo Minister said that the turtle eggs at Ramla Bay are expected to hatch sometimes towards the end of July.

He went on to say how important it is to keep the seas clean as well as the environment.

To highlight this point, a cleanup was carried out of the beach area by NGOs and students.

Minister Aaron Farrugia stressed the importance of protecting the biodiversity and ecosystems of our islands and the importance of children playing an active role in environmental safeguards because, he said, they are the present and the future of our country.

Many of the volunteers who are on 24-your watch looking after the nest at Ramla, attended this morning’s happy send-off for Jenna.
