The Malta Medical Association has said that it is withdrawing its directive on elective surgery, which will be back to normal on Monday, however, Outpatient directives remain in force.
In a statement on Friday afternoon, it said that following personal contact with the Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne, it is suspending all directives for postponing of elective surgery at all public Health Facilities as from 8.00am on Monday, the 10th of August, and all surgeries will be performed normally.
The Association explained that this follows the announcement by the Prime Minister of the new measures “attempting to contain the Covid-19 virus, despite partial disagreement, as a gesture of goodwill especially toward patients.”
MAM stated that it “recognises that the PM and the Health Minister are acknowledging that a public health problem is present and measures need to be taken,” and welcomed the compulsory wearing of masks indoors and the introduction of fines and enforcement in this regard.
The Association encouraged the Government to enforce quarantine rules and impose the prescripted fines if necessary, and to enforce all rules published by the superintendent of public health. It also stressed that regular statistics should be provided to the general public.
MAM would like to reiterated its “disapproval” of what it described as “unwarranted interference in the work of the superintendent of public health, where mass activities like parties up to 300 are being allowed.”
The Association argued that, “it is very clear that such parties will not control, but rather increase the spread the virus as shown in every textbook of epidemiology.”
While “reasserting its opposition to this measure,” MAM said that it will “also monitor the effectivity of enforcement before withdrawing its directive related to the outpatient appointments.”
MAM concluded by saying that it remains committed to safeguarding the health of its members and of the Maltese population.
