Betfair Lifecycle Challenge 2009This year’s event will take the cyclists to Turkey and they will cycle for 11 days to get to their final destination in Syria. Some 25 cyclists were sent off for the first of 17 rides in preparation for the Betfair Lifecycle Challenge 2009 on Sunday 19th April 2009 from the entrance of Mater Dei Hospital. The cyclists were given the traditional briefing by Mr Alan Curry, the chairperson and founder of Lifecycle Organisation, who explained the regime and training procedure for the coming weeks. He explained the discipline required and expected from the cyclists so as to prepare them for the venture ahead, both physically and psychologically.

A representative for the Betfair offices in Malta, Mr Steve Ives- a managing Director of the Malta based Betfair office, addressed the cyclists and expressed the company’s enthusiasm of extending Betfair’s existing Worldwide charity support to Malta and support such a worthy cause. He also said he admired all the cyclists for their interest and intent in going through all the sacrifices and dedication to actually do such a challenge. The back-up team and committee are obviously another crucial foundation for this event as without such a good organisation backing the cyclists, the event would not be a success.

The cyclists were then sent off by the Hon Mr Clyde Puli, the Parliamentary Secretary for Sports who encouraged all the participants, both cyclists and back up. He also expressed his admiration for the way in which sports was the key factor in collecting all the sponsorships Lifecycle Organisation collected every year. He wished all good luck and his support in their venture.

The first ride took the cyclists from Mater Dei Hospital down to the coast road for the first 60km ride. The back-up team and Mr Alan Curry followed the cyclists. The back-up team marshalled the route and Mr Curry gave feedback to the cyclists about their technique and other relevant issues.
