The Tourism Ministry has said that 300 inspections were carried out on food establishments across Malta and Gozo at the weekend.

Last weekend, the Enforcement Directorate within the Malta Tourism Authority carried out 300 inspections in various locations to see that the latest Legal Notice is being implemented by the food establishments.

The Ministry said that it emerged that two establishments were not complying with the law in question and that legal action would be taken against them.

The Enforcement Directorate within the Authority has been the main body to carry out inspections and controls on tourist establishments since measures were taken to control the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Ministry said that in the period between March and the end of May, when food establishments were restricted to take-away sales only and deliveries and other establishments had to remain closed, more than 40,000 checks were carried out.

This was done to ensure that these measures are being observed, the Ministry added. During this period ten establishments were found not to be observing the measures and legal action was taken as set out in the legal notice.

From June to October, tourism operations could open provided they implemented and complied with protocols established by the Authority. During this period the Ministry said about 5,000 audits and inspections were carried out in food establishments and other tourist operations in this regard.

During this period, it said that 25 legal actions were taken against establishments that were found not to be in compliance with the protocols.
