Minister for Education Justyne Caruana, on facebook this morning has said that, “we are currently assessing the situation in schools and seeing different solutions. Coordination with the Health Authorities is ongoing.”

This morning there were reports of children turning up for school and being turned away, as there were no teachers available, after the MUT last night issued directives for a 2-day strike.

She added that “a few hours before the schools opened after the Christmas holidays we were faced with an industrial action where teachers were ordered not to report for work.”

Minister Caruana said that she “understands the inconvenience caused to parents and we are committed to addressing this for the good of our children.”

In an earlier post the Minister had said that “schools will open today and teachers are expected to report to schools normally and honour their work obligations.”

Minister Caruana thanked all those educators “who worked hand in hand during the pandemic to keep our schools open.”

The Ministry has taken additional measures to supervise schools in case teachers do not attend, Minister Caruana said.
