143 new Covid-19 cases, 119 cases in Gozo, 14 Hospital, with 1 in ITU

143 new Covid-19 cases were recorded in the past 24-hours, health authorities said. There were also 201 recoveries and 3 deaths, taking the total number of active cases to 2,740 in Malta and Gozo. The number of swabs taken over this period was 3,111.
Superintendent of Public Health Prof Charmaine Gauci, has said that out of the total, there are 119 active cases in Gozo, 14 are in the Gozo General Hospital, including 1 in ICU.
In Malta; At Mater Dei 18 are in ITI, 9 in IDU and 43 in other wards, 11 are in Boffa 10 in St Thomas, 12 in Karin Grech, 4 at Mount Carmel and 57 at the Good Samaritan Long-Term Care Facility.
She said that the 7-day average is 172 cases. Most cases and clusters are from households and social gatherings. Prof Gauci also noted that the peak in cases seen at the beginning of January is now decreasing.
Prof Gauci went on to say that there are still on 3 cases of the UK variant has been identified, but testing for it is still ongoing.
39.6 is the average age of positive cases in the last 7 days, with most cases being tested positive are between 25 and 34. Prof Gauci went on to say that cases registered this week are still relating to the festive period.
The Authorities said that 16,531 vaccine doses had been administered till yesterday – Thursday. Prof Gauci explained that around 600 people have so far received the second dose of the vaccine. She appealed to those who have received the vaccine to keep following the measures.
Details have not been provided by Health Authorities on the composition of yesterday’s 151 confirmed cases.
During the last 24 hours, Health Authorities said that 3 female patients, aged 92, 93 and 100, have passed away at Mater Dei Hospital, Karin Grech Hospital an the Good Samaritan Long Term Care Facility, respectively, being while positive for Covid-19.
The total number of cases are now up to 16,423. There have been 13,435 recoveries and 248 deaths, the Ministry said. 583,863 swab tests have been taken since the start of the pandemic in Malta.
The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has advised that it will be reporting figures on a weekly basis – every Thursday. As of week 2 it shows that the number of cases recorded for Malta is at 15,742 and the number of deaths showing is 241. The 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 is now up to 508.96. Malta is currently in 13th position in the EU/EEA and UK. Ireland is at the top with 1444.44.
Public Health Authorities said that anyone who needs to take a test should call 111 to set an appointment, even if they do not have any symptoms. It is to be noted that due to the large volume of calls, it can take some time to get through.
All swabbing centres are open every day, including the one in Gozo, however appointments must be made on the above number.
The Ministry of Health, while offering its condolences to the relatives of the deceased, called on the public to continue to follow the preventive measures so that we can protect the most vulnerable in our society – This includes wearing of masks, social distancing and hand hygiene.
