With the help of Sophie the sniffer dog from the Customs Canine Unit, the Customs Anti Money Laundering Team, have intercepted over €13,000 at Malta International Airport.

Customs said that during one of the flight screenings by the AMLT Officials one passenger bound for an EU member state underwent a physical check on his belongings, following a canine reaction on his luggage.

When asked, Customs said that he denied that he was carrying excess cash, however, subsequent inspections resulted in the discovery of €13,090.

The passenger was fined on the spot as per legislation.

Even though there has been fewer flights arriving and departing Malta, Customs explained that its Officials are operating as usual at our borders and routinely screening passengers, arriving and departing, in a bid to hamper illicit activity at our borders.
