The Ministry for Gozo has launched a scheme for the restoration of wind-powered water pumps. This scheme aims to valorize this practical and traditional application of renewable energy utilisation.

The scheme for the restoration of wind-powered water pumps is intended to subsidise costs related to the restoration of such systems that are presently found in fields around Gozo whilst promoting it as a traditional sustainable application which is still valid. This scheme was also launched as an another initiative within the eco-Gozo concept.

Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, gave details regarding this scheme, during a press conference held in the limits of Marsalforn valley. The scheme will be financed by the Ministry for Gozo and co-ordinated by the Department for Projects and Development within the same Ministry.

Eligible applicants must be residents of Gozo who either own property which is used for agricultural/agri-tourism purposes or registered farmers whose land is registered under IACS, where such systems are installed. Applicants, who will be favourably considered under this scheme, will be entitled for a financial subsidy covering 75% of the costs related to the purchase of equipment and/or labour required to render the system operational, up to a maximum of €1000.

“The use of wind-powered water pumps is one of the traditional sustainable practices that are valid up to this day. In Gozo they are also an added value connected with the conservation of the Gozitan rural environment,” said Giovanna Debono. She also added that the Ministry for Gozo is involved in the drafting of a strategy that will indicate the way forward towards the attainment of Government’s eco-island vision for Gozo.

The Minister emphasised that the eco-island vision aims to achieve high sustainable development standards for the island whilst ensuring the protection of its heritage. Minister Giovanna Debono concluded that the restoration of wind-powered water pumps as alternative energy sources for agricultural use is an initiative that moves in this direction.

Further information regarding this scheme may be retrieved from the website www.eco.gozo.com or from the Ministry for Gozo on tel: 22100210/22100261.

Applications will be received by the Department for Projects and Development at the Ministry for Gozo, St Francis Square, Victroria, by not later than Friday, the 9th of June 2009.

i like the restoration of wind-powered water pumps. they should also tie up all the pumps to a local water system where all the farmers will benefit from the water those pumps pump up to the local farmers. and the agriculture system
