Public water dispensers have been launched to help reduce the use of plastics. For 20c for a litre of still water, the public will be able to fill their reusable bottles from water dispensers which are being placed in strategic locations by the Water Services Corporation (WSC).

The price will be for Still water: 500ml 10c, 1000ml 20c and for Sparkling Water of the same size, 20c and 40c. The public is being encouraged to make more use of reusable water bottles. For safety and security reasons, payment from the public dispensers will be contactless.

WSC made the announcement whilst outlining its plans to make drinking water more accessible to the public and to diversify its services to the consumers.

Minister for Energy, Enterprise and Sustainable Development Miriam Dalli explained that the use of the water dispensers will support the country in its commitment to reduce the use of plastic and the carbon footprint emanating from the production of plastic.

She added that, “reducing the use of plastic is a national goal that we must achieve as part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”

The WSC has already installed over 70 free of charge water dispensers at Mater Dei Hospital. In collaboration with the Education Ministry, a further 200 free of charge dispensers will be installed in schools. No information was given as to the locations for the public dispensers.

This project is part of a series of projects being undertaken by the WSC to continue to offer quality services to consumers, it said.
