There was an increases in trips, passengers and vehicles on sea transport during the third quarter when compared to the corresponding period last year.

According to the latest data issued by the National Statistics Office, between July and September a total of 12,758 trips were made between Malta and Gozo, carrying 1,605,604 passengers. This number includes 203,574 passengers who used the fast ferry services during this period.

August was recorded as the busiest month with a total of 4,282 trips or 33.6% of total trips for the quarter.

1,402,030 passengers travelled between Mgarr and Cirkewwa during the third quarter, this was an increase of 9.7% when compared to the corresponding quarter of 2020, the NSO said.

August saw the highest numbers of passengers – 487,074 or 34.7% of the total for the quarter. When compared to the previous year, the number of vehicles increased by 5.7%, totalling 551,438.

The number of trips amounted to 8,552, an increase of 3.0% over the same period last year. The majority of trips took place in August – 2,876 or 33.6% of total trips for the quarter.

The NSO noted that during January-September, both passenger and vehicle traffic originating from Cirkewwa was busiest on Fridays and Saturdays. From the Mgarr terminal, passenger and vehicle traffic was highest on Sundays and Mondays.
