Adopt a Pet Day is to be held on the 16th of January 2022, and is aimed at individuals and families interested in meeting pets who are waiting to be adopted, as well as those interested in learning about animals and their care.
Minister for Agriculture and Animal Rights Anton Refalo said that work has been done over the last two years to raise awareness of the best way to care for pets.
He said that reports are received on a regular basis in the Animal Welfare Directorate, with inspections resulting in confiscations, all this as well as emergency calls.
Minister Refalo thanked all the staff of the Directorate for their work in rescuing and caring for pets, as well as the sanctuaries and NGOs that work for the benefit of these animals.
Animal Welfare Director Patricia Azzopardi said that neutering saves thousands of cats and dogs from being abandoned on the streets, while microchipping helps every stray pet return to its owner as soon as possible.
Minister Refalo stressed that the Government will continue to encourage and educate the Maltese and Gozitan people about adoptions.
Adopt a Pet Day will be held at the Salesian Brigade Headquarters in Ghajn Tuffieha.

I will surely attend hoping that I will have enough courage to adopt a dog. My problem has been that I am on a very low income pension because my old employer did not pay my Social Welfare stamp. I like many other retired people would benefit imensely if we have a pet but when it comes to expenses at the Vet, many of us would not be able to afford the cost of the medical care these pets usually need.
