Imagine its 1943 and Operation Husky is on the planning table. A top-secret military organisation that operated from Malta offered major contributions towards the historical invasion of Sicily.
On Sunday, the public will have the opportunity to check out what happened on that day during a Heritage Malta Open Day at Fort St Angelo.
Fort St Angelo will be offering a day of adventure, during which the Malta Command WWII Living History group will be taking over the fort.
The group will also be inaugurating its newly formed Combined Operations Unit. Combined Operations Pilotage Parties, also known as COPP in short, were a top-secret military organisation that operated for the first time during the war by being sent to Algiers.
The day’s events will get underway on Sunday, the 12th of December with a presentation lecture at 11:00am in the Admiral’s Hall, where the Malta Command will be launching the mentioned secret unit which carried missions from Malta during 1943.
Two tables on each side of the hall will showcase weapons used by this specialised unit, together with other important equipment in use during military operations from Malta. A live demonstration session of these weapons will be held following the lecture.
On the day, the Fort’s upper part, better known as the Cavalier, will also be open to the public, with an exclusive curatorial tour for Heritage Malta members in the afternoon.
Heritage Malta said that veterans from the Royal Naval Association – Malta Branch will be honouring the event with their presence.
Fort St Angelo will be open from 10:00am to 5:00pm, with last admissions at 4:30pm. Tickets for general entry will only be available at the door, with reduced prices as follows: €5 for adults, €2 for children, students, seniors and Heritage Malta passport holders, and free admission for Heritage Malta members.
Tickets for the lecture cost €1 and are available online by clicking here.
Members will be admitted to the lecture free of charge but should prebook by sending a request on info@heritagemalta.org.
