Our politics ``normalises ugliness, corruption and indifference towards the environment''Ghawdix, a young NGO that focuses on the protection of Gozo’s environment, has set out its response to the election proposals – “or lack thereof ”- with regards to just this subject.

In a statement the NGO argued that “our politics normalises ugliness, corruption and indifference toward the environment.’

“Throughout our work as an NGO, we spoke with several politicians. We understood the need to collaborate with them and trusted that we could do so,” Ghawdix.“We also spoke with the Planning Authority.”

Ghawdix said that “face-to-face with us, they all agree that Gozo is becoming uglier, and they claim to be dissatisfied with the situation.”

But then!

“An election crops up and almost (we repeat, almost) none of the candidates commit to combat the most critical issue that is upsetting the majority of Gozitans, as stated in a survey by the GRDA: construction that is ugly, hasty and in excess,” Ghawdix stated.

The NGO added that, “green, open spaces are promised to us while natural green, open spaces are destroyed before our very eyes – what is the sense in this?” It asked.

Ghawdix then posed this question to the candidates of the 13th district:

“Is the reason for your silence regarding change in policies that are currently permitting Gozo’s destruction…………

– “indifference toward your own island, your childhood memories, your heritage?

– insensitivity toward Gozitans’ concerns?

– complicity with developers steeped in the lie of unbridled ‘progress’?

– fear of losing your super-rich party financiers?

– corruption?

– fear of your peers’ response within your own party?

– a simple and utter lack of care?

– all of the above?

We expected better from you. If not you, then who?”

Ghawdix concluded by saying, “to those that follow our work: remember these questions whenever party canvassers call you up to ask if you – need anything.”

You are so correct in what you say. As a property owner in Sannat the planning ugliness, the indifference from the powers that be is breath-taking. They should be ashamed of themselves. There is no vision other than greed and total disregard for those affected. Another example is the hunting laws particularly with reference to bird life. Why not in the 21st century ban the carnage which takes place every year. Any votes lost will be more than offset by votes gained.
