In preparation for the arrival of Pope Francis in Malta and Gozo next Saturday and Sunday, students from 81 State, Church and Independent schools in recent weeks have been invited to express themselves artistically about the theme ‘All Brothers.’
This initiative was through hand-drawn drawings, videos, dances, collages, interviews, writings, poems and models.
The work created by the students has been compiled in two books that the Bishops of Malta and Gozo will present to Pope Francis when they will talk about the work of the Church in Malta.
All this was made possible by the reflections that the educators made in class on who Pope Francis is and on his writings, in particular the teaching in the encyclical ‘All Brothers’ (Fratelli Tutti).
The resources used in the classroom have been adapted by Spiritual Development in Schools according to the age of the children.
In a message to the students, Archbishop Charles Jude Scicluna thanked each and every student for taking part in this project with great enthusiasm. Mons. Archbishop appealed to them that during these days the children pray for the visit of Pope Francis among us to leave the desired good: “The visit of the Pope can be a beautiful seed that the Lord will sow in our hearts and he finds a heart that welcomes the word of the Pope and bears much fruit, but it depends on us.”
In Gozo, the artistic expressions were also presented today to Bishop Anton Teuma during a meeting with the heads, assistant heads and students of 21 schools in Gozo.
Each Gozitan school has worked on a single theme in the Pope’s encyclical. The students developed the topic and rewrote the excerpt they worked on. This was done by each student in the school freely writing only one word out of the whole text.
The Gozitan students’ book includes photos of the whole process that has taken place in schools in recent weeks.
