Malta Cafe Scientifique explained that the atmosphere is the thin envelope of gases surrounding the Earth helping us to breathe, shielding the earth from the sun’s harmful rays, and keeping it a warm place.

In an attempt to help scientists, conduct studies on the Maltese atmosphere, Malta Cafe Scientifique said that Malta had its first space adventure by launching a space balloon that rose 37 Km above the island into space.

STRATOS-1 is a space weather balloon that had measuring devices attached to it to collect never-seen-before space photos of the Maltese islands, as well as gathering data about the islands’ atmosphere.

The public are invited to join Malta Café Scientifique on Wednesday, the 4th of May, at Valletta’s Spazju Kreattiv, Studio B, St James Cavalier, with Prof. Kristian Zarb Adami at 7pm on a journey to space to discover what went into preparing for such a space adventure, the path the balloon took to space, and the images and data collected.

Malta Café Scientifique thanked the STEAM project, Spazju Kreattiv, for hosting this event, the University of Malta, and Malta Chamber of Scientists (of which the café forms part).
