A group of residents from Luqa in Malta have been instrumental in saving a community of hedgehogs that were located in a field that was being developed in the locality.

Nature Trust – FEE Malta has thanked the residents, saying that through their call to the Wildlife Rescue Section, volunteers of NTM went on site and installed the first traps to catch and relocate the hedgehogs.

NTM explained that unfortunately the rescue mission started with some hiccups “as the traps that had been installed were immediately stolen.”

However thanks to the determination of the volunteers and the residents, NTM said that new traps were set and apart from the residents keeping an eye on the traps, they also managed to catch a good number of hedgehogs in a few days.Photos of hedgehog rescue and siteThey were assisted by the construction workers from the site who also gave a helping hand in the operation.

The organisation expressed their sincere thanks to the residents, especially Laura of Triq il Vjolin Hadrani in Luqa for their marvellous support in making the rescue and relocation of hedgehogs operation a success. A big thanks also goes to Jane and Phil, the NTM Wildlife Rescue Volunteers in the South of Malta.

The Wildlife Rescue Section is today supported by ERA and Lottoland and many other contributors all with the objective to save local protected wildlife that otherwise would end up injured or dead.

Nature Trust Volunteers in the wildlife rescue sections of Malta and Gozo all have an ERA permit to handle protected wildlif, the organisation said.

Wildlife Rescue Emergency Number is 9999 9505.
