A new Echo Cardiac Ultrasound has been purchased to be used at Gozo General Hospital (GGH) for procedures of echocardiography, including pharmacological stress echocardiography for adult patients.
The new echo machine at GGH, which was supplied by Steward Health Care Malta (SHCM), will also provide 3D imaging on both transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, as well as contrast studies and strain imaging.
Dr Daniela Cassar Demarco, Consultant Cardiologist at Mater Dei Hospital (MDH) and GGH, said, “we are now also in a position to offer paediatric probes, and once the system is fully functional, we will be able to improve the paediatric echocardiography service.”
It was explained that while the system is based at GGH and will primarily benefit GGH patients, it will also be linked to MDH in Malta to provide a holistic approach to the management of cardiac patients.
Assunta Attard, Cardiac Practice Nurse at GGH, said that during an awareness campaign to mark World Heart Day on 29th of September, “the Cardiac Rehabilitation team was able to provide very useful information to whoever visited GGH, not only about their physical health but also what services and online resources are available to help tackle these risk factors. We kept the theme ‘do your part, care for your heart’ in mind while planning this event, as it perfectly encapsulates the take-home message we wanted visitors to leave the stand with.”

This is great news. Any new medical instrument in our hospital is a blessing. Always was. I hope that Steward will keep on giving the good service they have been giving since their take over. One day they will equip our hospital with the much needed MRI. It will be a new one not a gift from Mater Dei. It will give better results than they two which we have on the main island and many delicate cases will travel from Malta to Gozo to benefit from this better Medical Imagery instrument. But will I ever make use of it? At present I go to my doctor or at the clinic. I tell them that I cannot do anything because I have continuous pain in my back. He will refer me to the specialist who comes to Gozo, say once a week so the visit will be for mid of next year. Then the specialist will put me on the two year waiting list to have an MRI. By then I might die or my slip disc will slip. So Minister of the Elderly join forces with whom you ought to and make this miracle of getting us an MRI happen. I trust in you and in Stewards.
