Nature Trust (Malta) have announced that they welcome the MEPA Planning Appeals Board decision in confirming a DCC board decision to refuse permission for the construction of a block of flats at the Wied tal-Madonna in Mellieha. The NGO said that this construction would have spanned across the valley further destroying the valley habitat and cutting off the water course completely

NTM said that valley habitats should be given maximum protection in the Maltese Islands by MEPA. Valley systems offer some of the best examples of biodiversity in our Islands. The NGO urges MEPA to continue safeguarding valleys and refuse applications in such ODZ. Cases include the Wied il Ghasel development, Bahrija and many more

In conclusions the NGO said that they urge MEPA that in cases where development had begun and halted with permits withdrawn or refused, the developer should be made to restore the damage done and bring the site to as close as it originally was. Only in this way will the environment be genuinely protected and conserved.
