The Left think-tank organisation Zminijietna has appealed to the Government to “take a progressive approach to list various sites around Malta and Gozo for ‘Public Domain Status,” including Hondoq in Gozo.

Zminijietna in a statement on Sunday, urged the Government to “take a proactive approach and include for ‘Public Domain Status’ the recommended list given in 2016 by various eNGOs which include among other the area of Hondoq ir-Rummien, Manoel Island, Kalanka Delimara, and Comino.

It pointed out that “the Qala Local Council is also pushing for Public Domain Status to Hondoq ir-Rummien.”

Zminijietna said that “in 2016, Parliament passed the Public Domain Act to have the entire Maltese foreshore re-classified as ‘public domain,’ but stopped short of enforcing such law.”

Furthermore, Zminijietna questioned the “ongoing procedure taken by the government to further negotiate for ‘beach concessions’ with private interests.”

Zminijietna insisted that the Government should “halt the proposed decision to remove from Public Domain, the area of Chalet in Sliema and two other sites in Qawra.”

The Government should first give a legal protection status to Hondoq, Comino and other sites listed by the eNGOs,” it said.

Zminijietna concluded by saying that it believes that various organisations should join forces against the Government’s policy to ignore eNGOs requests.”
