Art…e Gallery in Victoria has hosted a number of exhibitions over the past couple of years and has become an ideal venue for art exhibitions in Gozo. The gallery is currently hosting an exhibition of works by Therese Storace.
The official opening was held in the quaint pjazza opposite the gallery and the exhibition was inaugurated by Joseph Camilleri together with the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono.
A number of the exhibited works include a collection of framed pencil and pen wash drawings, executed in different techniques. Faint flowing pencil lines suggesting the female figure are hung side by side with powerful nudes rendered in bold pencil and water washes. In her other drawings, Therese Storace allows her pen free reign, creating strokes criss-crossing and circulating over and over in continuous motion on the white paper surface, resulting not in a tortured, restless figure, however, in the tranquil poses which dominate a large part of her work.
Some of the other larger works focus on specific parts of the human figure, with less definition but more concentration on the use of texture and bolder, largely acrylic, brushstrokes.
A few of the other paintings, such as ‘Woman and Wine’ and ‘Godess of Fertility,’ can best be described as figurative yet surreal, where the female figure becomes enclosed by the dream landscape which she inhabits.
Flowers adorn a number of the female figures, and seem to be a recurrent presence within Therese Storace’s work. Some of the larger paintings delight in juxtaposing the beauty of flowers and the beauty of the human body within the same pictorial space.
A complete sense of calmness and tranquility is tangible when entering the gallery and looking at the figures. This was a point strongly emphasised by the critic Joe Camilleri when introducing Therese Storace’s works to the public.
The exhibition runs until the 7th of August and is open from 9.15am until 12.15pm and on Friday from 5pm until 7pm.
