In 12 months to March employed persons rose by 529, whilst those unemployed rose by 915The gainfully occupied population in March 2009 went up by 529 full-timers and 1,536 part-timers when compared to the corresponding month last year.

Full-time Employment

In March 2009, the labour supply increased by 1,444 over twelve months: total gainfully occupied went up by 529, whilst unemployment rose by 915. The principal economic activities registering an increase in employment were real estate, renting and business activities [NACE 70-74] and construction [NACE 45]. The latter shift is essentially due to a re-classification of employment in the public sector between agriculture, hunting and related service activities [NACE 01] and construction [NACE 45]. Sectors registering drops in employment included manufacturing [NACE 15-37], and hotels and restaurants [NACE 55].

In the 12 months to March 2009, the number of full-time gainfully occupied persons in real estate, renting and business activities [NACE 70-74] rose by 1,219. Similarly, wholesale and retail trade [NACE 50-52] went up by 430.

On the other hand, the total number of full-time gainfully occupied persons in manufacturing activities [NACE 15-37] dropped by 1,696. However, some manufacturing sub-sectors increased their employment levels – these included: manufacture of chemicals and chemical products [NACE 24] by 64, and publishing, printing and reproduction of recorded media [NACE 22] by 59.

In the period under review, the hotels and restaurants sector [NACE 55] shed 108 persons.

Part-time Employment

In March 2009, total part-time employment rose by 2,732 when compared to the revised figures in respect of March 2008. This increase comprised 1,196 persons whose part-time job is their secondary occupation and 1,536 persons whose part-time activity is their primary job. Table 8 shows that education [NACE 80] and wholesale and retail trade [NACE 50-52] registered significant increases in part-timers
