Environmental organisations are reminding the public that objections close tomorrow against the proposed plans for the new Comino Hotel and villas filed by HV Hospitality who are part of the Hili Group.
The seven organisations said that “the plans would see the site of the former Comino Hotel redeveloped, including the replacement of the nine derelict bungalows currently at Santa Marija Bay by a much larger complex of 19 villas complete with a convenience store and amenities.”
To date, over 12,000 objections have been registered with the Planning Authority.
The description of works on the application says: “Proposed demolition of existing hotel at San Niklaw Bay and existing bungalows at Santa Marija Bay. The proposed development consists of part excavation and the construction of Class 3B hotel (140 beds) at San Niklaw Bay area and individual serviced bungalows (19 units) at Santa Marija Bay area with ancillary facilities and amenities including spa (class 3C), bars/lounges (Class 4C) and restaurants (Class 4D), upgrading the existing berthing facilities; construction of swimming pools; reservoirs; complete upgrade of the infrastructure systems and back of house facilities. Upgrading and reinstatement of the natural ecological and existing disturbed terrain in both San Niklaw and Santa Marija areas in accordance with the Gozo and Comino Local Plan.”
The NGOs pointed out that Comino is designated as a Rural Conservation Area, a Nature Reserve, a Special Area of Conservation, a Special Protection Area, an Important Bird Area (IBA) of International and EU Importance, a Natura 2000 site, a Bird Sanctuary, and a Dark Sky Heritage site.
The proposed development is “not compatible with any of these designations” and the organisations said it has been described as “monstrous” and an “occupation by stealth” of this island “which should be held in trust for all Maltese and Gozitan residents to enjoy.”
The public can submit objections to this development application (PA/4777/20) to the Planning Authority until tomorrow, Monday, the 23rd of January, via this online form by clicking here.
The organisations who have filed an objection to PA/4777/20 are BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Helwa, Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar, Friends of the Earth Malta, Moviment Graffitti, Nature Trust Malta – FEE, and Ramblers’ Association of Malta.
I am sorry to see this raping of this small island Comino, nobody should be allowed to expand any more buildings on this beautiful island.
At the same time, I am asking myself, why have these people been allowed to put up all these deckchairs in the summer months.
I believe there is some strong peoples behind all of this, I am sorry but the whole of Malta has been going completely out of hand.
