BirdLife "disgusted and alarmed about promotion of killing of birds in schools"BirdLife Malta has said is “disgusted and alarmed at the fact that the Education Department is allowing the promotion of killing of birds in schools.”

“It is shameful that this is being done with the blessing of the Education Ministry and financed by the Gozo Ministry, who is responsible for hunting,” BirdLife said in a statement.

Birdlife added that “it is incredible that in 2023 the education authorities want to promote the use of a firearm among children for the killing of birds.”

BirdLife Malta stated that it has already complained with Education Minister Clifton Grima, “requesting this decision to be reversed and will do everything that is necessary so that this promotion of killing of birds with the use of a firearm among minors does not materialise.”

In the letter to Minister Grima, BirdLife Malta said it reminded him “that the killing of birds in Malta is only done for individual enjoyment and in some cases also for monetary gain.”

BirdLife Malta CEO Mark Sultana stated “he is hopeful that there is the possibility and also the will to stop this promotion immediately and requested the Minister to keep him informed of the position he will be taking in this regard.”

Disgraceful. It’s hardly surprising though given the Minister for Gozo is a hunter. Was this his idea, perhaps?
