Malta Bankers’ Association hold their AGM

At the recent Annual General Meeting of the Malta Bankers’ Association, Mr Joseph Said was elected as Chairman of the Board of the Association for the coming year. The other Board members are Mr Edward Cachia, Mr Marcel Cassar, Ms Muge Cergel, Mr Tonio Depasquale, Mr Cenk Kahraman, Mr Ozgur Ozdemir, Mr Alan Richards, Mr Victor Rizzo Giusti, Mr Anthony Schembri and Mr Joaquim da Silva Pinto.
The combined balance sheet total of the Association’s member banks as at the end of 2008 reached €41 billion, whilst total equity stood at €3 billion. The number of their full time employees was 3,814. The direct contribution of the banking sector to the local economy remains significant, with payroll last year amounting to €106 million, taxation on profit on ordinary activities reaching €80 million, and dividends paid to resident shareholders amounting to over €52 million. Loans and advances to customers totalled €26 billion, with amounts owed to customers standing at €17 billion.
