All activities due to be held in Gharb this weekend related to St Valentine’s and Carnival have been cancelled in a show of solidarity with the residents of Pjazza taz-Zjara tal-Madonna where balconies came down on Thursday, the Local Council said.

The incident happened during Storm Helios, when the stone balconies fell with a low boundary wall onto the street landing on five parked cars causing considerable damage. Thankfully nobody was injured.

Gharb Mayor David Apap Aguis said that apart from the damage to the three residences – one of which was the family residence of former Gozo Bishop Nikol Cauchi – and five vehicles, “we also lost two prominent heritage galleries in Pjazza tal-Gharb, stone galleries synonymous with the locality.”

Members of the Civil Protection Department and Police attended the scene.

The clean-up operation continued in non-stop rain until late evening. The Mayor expressed his since thanks to all involved, as well as to the residents for their offers of help and support.
