There were 39,287 people residing in Gozo on Census Day – 21st of November – this was an increase of approximately 25% since 2011, according to the results of the latest Census.

The graph above shows the total population for each locality since 1921. The new locality of Munxar was constituted from parts of Sannat and Fontana. The new locality of Fontana is shown as separate locality in 1967.

The Census, released by the National Statistics Office, shows Zebbug in Gozo was second out of three localities on the Maltese Islands with the largest increase in population in 2021 at 79.4%. The other two were in Malta – San Pawl Il-Bahar (95.4%), and Msida (75.4%).

These three are all localities which are predominantly characterised by a high share of foreign residents, the NSO said.

Ghasri is the least densely populated locality on the Maltese Islands with 104 persons per square kilometre – and in fact, is the only locality which is comparable to the EU average.

The Census found that among Gozitan localities, Victoria and Fontana had the largest population densities with more than 2,000 inhabitants per square kilometre in each locality.

Gozitan residents were slightly older than the Maltese with average ages of 43.8 years.

I wonder how many of those actually live in Malta and register as being resident in their Gozo holiday home.
