The tendering process is underway for improvement of arterial and residential roads in Gozo, Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, has said.
The Minister was replying to a Parliamentary Question by Opposition MP Chris Said, who had asked the Minister what the programme is for the improvement of arterial and residential roads in Gozo for this year.
Dr Said also asked which roads are to be included in the programme and what the estimated costs are.
In his reply, Minister Camilleri said that the Ministry is currently waiting for the outcome of the tendering process so that it can then distribute the works “according to urgency and priorities.”
He went on to say that the call for tenders for Architects has closed to start the design of the arterial road that leads from Nadur to Qala which will include Triq i-Tigrija n-Nadur, Triq il-Qala both in Nadur and in Qala, Triq il-Mithna il-Qala and Triq San Guzepp il-Qala which leads to the square.
This road was last built in the seventies and it is expected to be one of the arterial roads that will be built in this legislature, Minister Camilleri said.
The Minister also said that he is waiting for the appeal to be decided so that another arterial road will be started from Victoria to Marsalforn.
In September 2021, during a meeting with Din l-Art Helwa Ghawdex and the Gozo Regional Development Authority regarding the Marsalforn Road Reconstruction Project, the Gozo Minister stated his “commitment and openness to achieve consensus and to incorporate proposals by Din l-Art Helwa Ghawdex to achieve a more sensitive design which will retain the road’s scenic character, minimising the amount of agricultural land taken, loss of trees and the risk to valley watercourses while reducing traffic in central Victoria through the planned bypass, ensuring road safety and reducing the overall cost of the project.”
However, both Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar (FAA) and Din l-Art Helwa Ghawdex said that they would be appealing against the permit issued to Transport Malta to widen he Marsalforn Road.
“This project will also destroy 300 trees and shrubs, of which 44 are protected species, impact wild flora and fauna, destroy a waterway, dikes, water reservoirs and a cultural landscape – just to widen what is essentially a village road which only sees significant but manageable traffic for three months in a year,” FAA had said.

This is a terrible idea and will destroy trees and nature. They are doing the same thing that was done to Malta and now they also want to have crematorium in Gozo and Malta. Please do a search and read how many people complain about the odors that come out of crematoriums and flow through the air.
