Earlier this month, the Green Diplomacy Network Malta, together with Nature Trust FEE Malta, planted 250 indigenous trees and shrubs at the Xrobb L- Ghagin Nature Park.

This was part of the Arbor activities. Arbor Day is a secular day of observance marked in many countries by planting trees to increase awareness and reflect on the importance of the role they play in our environment.

The Green Diplomacy Network incorporates the Embassies and High Commissions of Ireland, The Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Italy, India, Australia, the UK, France, the United States, Hungary and Spain.

It is a newly formed network set up to amplify the positive impact of foreign missions environmental and climate efforts in Malta and to raise awareness of the work being done in these areas.

Nature Trust Malta said that the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funded project at Xrobb L- Ghagin is nearing completion, and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre and the Park, will open its doors again to the public towards May.

Nature Trust Executive President, Vincent Attard, said that it was an honour, and also encouraging, to see that the Green Diplomacy Network was helping give its share to greening the Maltese islands, and supporting the NGO in its ongoing nature conservation projects.

He added that once the Xrobb L-Ghagin park finally reopens after the project is ready, he looked forward to the thousands of people visiting the park in the south of Malta once again. Before Covid, the park was getting over 20.000 visitors a year.

Attard explained that as the Wildlife rehab centre project started, the remaining parts of the Deutschwelle Radio Station, which so far were not in use, were to be restored, and all dangers removed from the dilapidated parts of the building. Therefore, the park had to be closed down on Health and Safety recommendations.

Now that the building is nearly ready, the park will open for all to enjoy, with the additional attraction of the wildlife rehab centre. All will remain free to the public.

Representative of the Green Diplomacy Network, Ciara O’ Shea – Embassy of Ireland, thanked Nature Trust Executive Vincent Attard for hosting the network, at what was their first official engagement, and the network looks forward to future collaboration with Nature Trust FEE Malta in the conservation of Maltese nature.

Further trees are expected to be planted in the coming weeks by other corporate agencies
