Gozitan MCAST academic Dr Charles Daniel Saliba presented his research, The Maltese Financial Mindset: A Paremiological Analysis, at the 20th Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Proverbs in Tavira, Portugal.
Organised by the International Association of Paremiology (AIP-IAP), the colloquium brought together scholars from around the world, including Wolfgang Mieder, distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Vermont and a leading authority on proverbs. This was Dr Saliba’s third participation.
Drawing on selected Maltese proverbs containing the word flus and related monetary terms, Dr Saliba examined attitudes towards earning, saving and managing money, alongside the value and limits of wealth. His presentation explored connections between traditional proverbial wisdom and contemporary financial-literacy guidance.
His research in paremiology includes several papers and the trilingual book Provérbios Europeus/European Proverbs/Proverbji Ewropej, co-authored with AIP-IAP President Professor Rui Soares.
The book was launched at Tavira’s Municipal Library in 2022 under the patronage of Malta’s then Ambassador to Portugal, H.E. John Camilleri.
The paper is expected to appear in the colloquium proceedings, scheduled for publication in November 2027.
