Dr Mark Sagona, will be discussing – Design and Decorative Arts in 19th Century Malta: International Perspectives – in the next talk due to be held at Il-Hagar Museum, Gozo.

This lecture, being held in collaboration with the Department of Art and Art History of the University of Malta, shines a light on the main international design currents on the island throughout the nineteenth century.

It touches upon different styles, designers and decorative practitioners, both Maltese and foreign, who together gave Malta a significant Decorative Arts legacy with a strong European imprint.

Mark Sagona, a practising visual artist and curator, is Head of the Department of Art and Art History at Malta University’s Faculty of Arts. He is a leading specialist in the Decorative Arts in Malta within their international sphere and has researched, lectured and published widely on the subject, even abroad.

Dr Sagona has begun editing a series of specialised publications on the Decorative Arts, the first volume of which is offered by the publishers Midsea Books at a discounted price for this occasion.

In spite of its insularity, geographical location and minute size, Malta absorbed significant international artistic currents.

This is epitomised in the remarkably rich field of design and the decorative arts in the nineteenth century, when the islands were a British Colony with a strong Italian soul.

Religious, political, social, and economic forces coalesced to ensure that we were aware of the main European currents – and Malta even became a microcosm of the larger European context.

The talk is on Saturday, the 25th of March, starting at 11am.
