The Santa Marta Day Centre, which was inaugurated at the beginning of June, is offering services to people with disabilities and their families in Gozo, through the office of the Coordinator of Disability for Gozo. The office has now moved from the Day Centre in Ghajnsielem to the Santa Marta Day Centre.
The office of the Coordinator of Disability for Gozo was established after an agreement made between the Ministry for Gozo and the Disabled Persons Federation, aimed to promote the field of disability in Gozo. In the agreement that was signed in February of 2008, the Ministry for Gozo undertook to provide the required funding to the Federation to enable them to employ a coordinator and assistant coordinator to ensure an efficient service in the office. Their main aim is to increasingly improve the quality of life of disabled residents in Gozo.
Aside from the coordination of services offered by state and non-governmental organisations, the office of the Coordinator of Disability Gozo also performs a number of initiatives to aid improvements, including educational programmes and meetings to increase the knowledge and awareness of the needs and improvement in services that are required. The office also initiated the setting up of an e-newsletter that offers information on disability from both a local and international prospective, while continuing to conduct research in the same area.
Giovanna Debono, the Minister for Gozo, congratulated those involved and the initiatives that had been taken, saying that they complemented the work undertaken by the Ministry for Gozo, aimed at helping the disabled in Gozo.
The Minister also said that in addition to the opening of the Santa Marta Day Centre, there was also the Special unit within the Sannat Primary school, which is regularly attended by a number of disabled children from all around Gozo.
The Minister renewed the agreement between the Ministry for Gozo and The Federation for the Disabled, which was represented by the Chairman, Dr Kevin Cutajar.

I am fortunate to avail off the excellent Meals on Wheels service, but need nothing else offered by the Friends f the Sick and Elderly. I heard of you during a conversation with a friend in Ireland this morning. Do you help with other problems? For instance It is very difficult for me to get to the library, The Ministry offices Post office (even box), Police Station. I was ill for 5 days after going to the LESA tribunal for not correctly transferring my car. I did not even get the offered English translation for this as was not able to go out and ask a local. Also I cannot concentrate for getting back on the online banking. I do not expect these services to come free but would be interested to hear what help you offer some one who was admitted to hospital earlier in the year with heart failure and a blood clot on the brain.
