ORNIS Committee recommends spring hunting for Turtle dove and QuailBirdLife Malta has advised that the ORNIS Committee has today met and recommended to the Government the opening of a spring hunting season on the Vulnerable European Turtle-dove, apart from a hunting season for Common Quail.

“This despite the additional infringement proceedings announced by the European Commission against Malta in regard to this derogation in February,” BirdLife said.

If accepted by the Government, this will be the second consecutive year that hunting on the Turtle-dove in spring will be allowed following the lifting of the moratorium just before last year’s spring hunting season.

BirdLife explained that thanks to this moratorium, Turtle-dove hunting had not been allowed since 2017.

BirdLife Malta said that it will present its official reaction to this latest development in a press conference tomorrow.
