After weeks of preparation work, Xaghra Scout Group succeeded in bringing funds from the European Union for its ES.C.OUT project under the Action 1.1: Youth Exchanges program of the EU Youth in Action.
ES.C.OUT, which means European Sports Culture Outdoors, an eight day camp is being held in the Ramla Valley, near to Ramla Bay beach, between the 17th and 24th of August.
During the camp activities will be held that reflect the priorities of the program, ie citizenship, the participation of youth and cultural diversity, through the sporting activities and inter cultural interaction.
Participating in the project are 22 Scouts and 8 leaders from Malta, Portugal, Ireland and Turkey. They will be living together and experiencing this adventure. as well as making new friendships.
The project comprises people under 21 years of age, who form part of the Venture Scouts and Rover Scouts of the Xaghra Scout Group.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Public Consultation and Information, Chris Said, attended the opening of the project and praised the Xaghra Scout Group, although it has been established only a year and a half, it already comprises of more than 70 children and youths.
During the opening ceremony, which was conducted by Chief Scout Kenneth DeMartino, the Commissioner for Gozo Scouts, Laurie Saliba and the Group Scout Leader Vincent Vella, Chris Said said that over 3,600 young people benefited from the Youth in Action program and this figure shows the power of volunteering, particularly volunteering amongst young people.
Chris Said said that the scouts who are participating in this project show that the European Union is anything but an abstract concept that is enjoyed by people. The European Union is a project that benefits families, workers, businessmen, children, parents, the elderly and our youth.
The Parliamentary Secretary urged members of the Xaghra Scout Group to not only continue to strengthen their group but also continue to expand their horizons with more exchange programs with other groups from across the Europe .
