The estimates of material deprivation and housing problems survey have been released today by the National Statistics Office.

The survey revealed that in 2022 the material and social deprivation rate stood at 9.6%, down slightly from 2021, when it was 9.8%, whereas the severe material and social deprivation rate stood at 4.9%, again down from 2021 when it was 5.4%.

It also showed that last year the number of persons living in households which were severely materially and socially deprived stood at 25,370, this was down on 2021 when the number stood at 27,334. The number of persons living in materially and socially deprived household stood at 49,298, almost on a par with the previous year when it was 49,769.

The survey noted that 170,965 persons lived in a household which couldn’t afford to pay for a one week’s annual holiday away from home, while 78,728 persons lived in households which couldn’t afford to face unexpected financial expenses of €770 and more.

In 2022 it was found that the most frequently reported problems were pollution, grime or other environmental problems with 32.1% and noise from neighbours or from the street with 28.6%, the NSO said.
