The Planning Authority has re-launched a €5 million Irrestawra Darek scheme to help restore façades of residences in village core areas.

Residents who have their home within an urban conversation area (UCA) or is a scheduled Grade 1 or 2 building will be able to restore the façade of their property and receive a 100% refund for the works.

The Planning Authority (PA) is making available €5 million to help safeguard Malta’s village core areas and ensure that they remain an important part of the Islands’ architectural, cultural and social heritage.

The Authority said that it will reimburse all eligible restoration works carried out, subject that the amount does not exceed €11,000, for residences in UCAs and €16,000, for scheduled Grade 1 and 2 residences.

Part of the same refund will also include up to €800 for eligible professional service charges (including periti fees) and €200 for the Local Council permit fees.

Properties in UCAs need to have been built over 50 years ago. Residential properties which already benefitted from a previous refund scheme managed by the PA will not be eligible. €1 million is being allocated for scheduled residential properties, while €4 million is being allocated for residential properties in UCAs.

Eligible works include, among others, specialist cleaning (not sandblasting, power washing or chipping) of the façade, repair/replacement of doors, apertures or traditional timber/masonry/wrought iron balconies and the replacement of aluminium/pvc with traditional materials.

Submissions for this scheme open from Tuesday, the 30th of May, to the 30th of June, for residences in UCAs while for scheduled properties submissions will be between Tuesday, the 6th of June, and the 6th of July.

The Authority said that should the scheme get oversubscribed it will close beforehand. Submissions may only be effected by a local warranted Perit.

The funds for this and other similar schemes made available by the PA come from the fees it generates from the regularisation process applications. The regularisation process application provides property owners with the opportunity to regularise existing non-conformant developments located within the development boundaries or category 1 settlements.
