Total number of band players stood at 3,931 in 2008 The number of active band clubs during 2008 stood at 90, while a total of 3,931 persons were resident or trainee band players. The total band club membership amounted to 30,195; an overall drop of 0.3 per cent when compared to the previous year. This drop is mainly attributed to committee members which reached a total of 1,409 members and registered a drop of 14.2 per cent when compared to last year. The total number of band players, both resident and trainee, totalled 3,931, an increase of 0.1 percent, with respect to 2007. Other members registered an increase of 0.5 per cent when compared to the previous year.

Participation in band clubs is particularly dominated by men. In fact male members within this sector stood at 77.5 per cent of the total band club membership. Female participation registered an overall drop of 0.6 per cent when compared to 2007. Women representatives on band committees showed the most significant decline. These made up 6.7 per cent of the total, a proportionate drop of nearly half when compared to 12.7 per cent in 2007.

Band club members stood at 6.4 per cent of the total population aged 5-84 years. Percentages remained more or less the same across all categories.

The number of band programmes performed during the year under review totalled 1,247, approximating the totals of previous years for both programmes held within the same locality of the band club and in other localities.

Nearly 30 per cent of the total publications were produced in the Southern Harbour district. Magazines accounted for more than half the total publications in this district. The South Eastern and Northern Harbour districts followed, with 21.6 and 18.4 per cent of the total publications respectively. The Northern district had the least number of publications, accounting for less than 7 per cent of the total.

The Northern Harbour district comprised the largest amount of band players, of whom 538 were residents and 371 trainees. This district also constituted the largest amount of persons on band committees, amounting to 496 members.

Total expenditure last year amounted to €2,781,685, an increase of 13.0 per cent over last year. The majority of expenditure was attributed to the Southern Harbour district (23.9 per cent), the South Eastern District (22.7 per cent) and the Northern Harbour District (22.0 per cent) respectively. Nearly 40 per cent of the total expenditure went on remuneration of band players, registering an increase of 4.5 per cent over 2007.

Total income during 2008 reached €2,878,536, an increase of 10.4 per cent when compared to the previous year. The majority of income was mainly attributed to the South Eastern district and accounted for 27.8 per cent of the total. This was followed by the Southern Harbour district (20.3 per cent) and Northern Harbour district (19.5 per cent). Donations and fund-raising activities were the main source of income and accounted for 32.1 per cent and 17.7 per cent of the total, respectively.
