A 50-year old American woman is in a critical condition after finding herself in difficulty while swimming at the Blue Lagoon, Comino.
Police said that the incident happened at around midday on Sunday.
She was given first assistance by members of the Emergency Response and Rescue Corps who brought the woman to land and administered first aid until a medical team arrived at the scene.
The victim was transferred to the Gozo General Hospital where she was later certified to be in a serious condition.
Magistrate Simone Grech is leading an inquiry.
