I am writing to express my deep concern and frustration regarding the ongoing issue of irresponsible waste disposal that has been plaguing our beautiful island of Gozo this summer.
It is disheartening to witness the lack of consideration for our community and the environment, particularly in the areas near the Kempinski Hotel and farmhouses frequently rented by holidaymakers.
Throughout this summer season, the problem of littering has reached unprecedented levels. It appears that some visitors, who are here to enjoy our picturesque surroundings, are showing a complete disregard for the natural beauty and the quality of life that we, the residents, cherish dearly.
The situation is particularly dire in the vicinity of the Kempinski Hotel, where my fellow residents and I have been tirelessly cleaning up the mess left behind by inconsiderate individuals. The range of discarded items we find, from fast-food containers like McDonald’s cups and pizza boxes to even more concerning items like used condoms, is both alarming and unacceptable.
One of the major issues contributing to this problem is the inefficient waste management system in place for the farmhouses. Many of these establishments put out their rubbish for collection two to three days prior to the scheduled pick-up, which not only results in unsightly accumulations but also attracts scavengers, further worsening the problem.
In our effort to address this issue, we have reached out to the San Lawrenz Council for assistance, as well as the Kempinski Hotel.
Unfortunately, our pleas seem to have fallen on deaf ears. The council has provided us with only a single small bin, which has been tucked away in a corner of the car park, rendering it practically invisible when cars are parked nearby.
We are still awaiting a response from the Kempinski Hotel regarding their willingness to help tackle this growing problem.
In our determination to combat this issue, we have even resorted to putting up signs to direct people to the bin’s location.
It is disheartening to see that our beautiful Triq Ir Rokon has transformed into what feels like a litter dump. The occasional road sweeper visits are simply not enough to keep up with the ever-increasing litter problem.
We need collective action and awareness to ensure that our island remains the paradise it has always been.
It is high time for local authorities, establishments like the Kempinski Hotel, and visitors alike to take responsibility for the cleanliness of our beloved Gozo.
We call upon all residents and visitors to join hands in preserving the natural beauty and pristine environment that Gozo is known for. Let us work together to implement effective waste management solutions, raise awareness, and hold those who disrespect our island accountable for their actions.
We hope that we can inspire positive change for a cleaner and more beautiful Gozo.

The inefficient waste management for the holiday lets is the fault of the owners, it is down to them to control the waste from their establishment and it is they that should be prosecuted. If the lets finish then the owners should take the rubbish away and it is down to them to ensure the waste is sorted correctly and disposed of within the law.
I believe the authorities are supposed to be carrying out checks and from October are to start imposing fines, perhaps they could start in areas with large numbers of holiday lets and fine the owners.
Absolutely right !!
The problem of rubbish is getting out of hand. Bags are being left on street corners and in parking bays as shown above, the authorities have no chance of finding who dumped them. Why should I clean up after some disgusting wretch who can’t be bothered to deal with his or her own trash.
