Malta Aquarist Society - Gozo Section holds annual showFor the sixth year in a row, the Malta Aquarist Society – Gozo Section has held its annual show in the main hall of the Ninu Cremona Lyceum in Victoria. Fourteen members took part in this year’s show with a total of 23 aquariums and one small pond participating this year. Various fish were on display.

Fr Gerard Buhagiar blessed the show. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, together with the Mayor of Victoria, Dr Samuel Azzopardi, attended the opening of the show. Several speeches were held. First, there was an introductory speech by the secretary of the club, Martin Vassallo. Then, another speech was held by the president of the Malta Aquarist Society, Charles Grima who after finishing his speech, invited both the Minister for Gozo, Ms Giovanna Debono and Mr Samuel Azzopardi, Mayor of Victoria to both say some words for the occasion.

The judges were Martin Vassallo and Adrian Pugliesevich. With 47 points out of a maximum of 50, first place was awarded to a tank of Black Moscow guppies owned by Sean Said from Nadur. Two aquariums took second place. One was the shubunkin tank owned by Robert Bajada from Sannat and the other one was a tank owned by Joe Cefai from Xewkija. Another two tanks, both with 43 points, were awarded third prize. These are owned by Charles Pisani from Sannat and Fr. Gerard Buhagiar from Xaghra with Oscars and Congo Tetras respectively. This year, the President’s award went to Leon Muscat with a tank of Blue Dolphin Moorii and to Ms. Kristina Scerri with Black Moor Goldfish.

Ongoing parallel to the show, there was also a photographic competition. The members could bring any photo taken by them concerning the fish keeping hobby. 87 photos participated in this competition. The general public could vote for the photo they deemed best. The most voted photo was the one taken by Fr Gerard Buhagiar and it showed a Koi fish. The second chosen was that of a Discus taken by Charles Pisani and the third place was that of a Congo tetra owned by Fr. Gerard Buhagiar. There was also a lottery where the first prize – an aquarium was won by Chris Farrugia from Nadur. Also two vouchers, one for €40 and another for €20 were won by Sean Said and Leon Muscat respectively.
