Gozo talk - When Painting Reached Zero: Kazimir Malevich and the Birth of SuprematismWhen Painting Reached Zero: Kazimir Malevich and the Birth of Suprematism – is the title of a talk by Liliya Cauchi, taking place at the Arthall Gallery in Gozo.

The talk invites audiences to reconsider the relationship between form, feeling and meaning, and to discover how the apparent simplicity of a black square marked a profound turning point in the history of art.

The speaker asks ”how did a simple black square become one of the most revolutionary statements in modern art?” This lecture traces Kazimir Malevich’s artistic journey from representation to pure abstraction, exploring the historical and philosophical developments that led to his iconic Black Square (1915).

Through the radical ideas of Suprematism, Malevich challenged centuries of artistic tradition, proposing a new visual language liberated from the depiction of the visible world.

Liliya Cauchi is a sculptor and art educator based in Gozo, Malta. Alongside her artistic practice in ceramics and glass design, she teaches Art History at VPA Gozo, sharing her interest in the ideas, movements and stories that have shaped art throughout history.

Drawing on her background in fine arts and education, she brings the perspective of both a practising artist and an educator to her talks, encouraging audiences to look beyond the artwork itself and discover the ideas and historical contexts behind it.
