A new digital platform – AdoptAPet has been launched by Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights Alicia Bugeja Said, together with Animal Welfare Commissioner, Alison Bezzina.
The AdoptAPet website will allow anyone interested in adopting an animal to research and start the process in this central platform. It will collect and display information related to all animals currently in sanctuaries, including photos, age, name and type of animal.
Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said, explained how through various infrastructural and educational projects, the Government continues to encourage more families to take this step towards adoption.
“We are seeing how those interested in adopting, will be able to do so with a process simplified, she said.
The Parliamentary Secretary explained that, “by simplifying the process to adopt an animal, more animals will have the opportunity to find the love and appreciation they so deserve. This will help the sanctuaries to work more efficiently.”
Animal Welfare Commissioner Alison Bezzina explained that the website is intended to start and make the first stage of the adoption process easier, but it will be the sanctuaries who will continue to take care that the adopted animals are suitable for the family.
She went on to say that, “choosing the best families according to the character of the animals for adoption is a delicate process that requires experience and therefore this decision will be left to the expert volunteers of the sanctuaries.”

It was very plain and easy to tend to the needs of a pet when I was young. We never had to walk the dog every day on a leash, we did not take them to any groomer, we never bought bags of food and never took them to a vet. I would like to have a pet at my age for company but I have to pay a pet walker, groomer and a vet. I am nearly 70 years old. Yet I love pets and am thinking of getting a Camaleonte or black beard dragon.
