“We appeal for the decision to remove trees to be revoked. The urban socio-ecological system in that area must be protected,” said Leftist organisation Zminijietna.

In a statement on Tuesday, Zminijietna came out against the planning decision to remove Ficus trees as part of the Mosta square project.

“The fact that they have not yet been removed is only thanks to the quick intervention of activists from Moviment Graffitti, Birdlife and Mosta residents,” it said.Zminijietna appeals for decision to remove trees to be revoked“These trees form part of an urban ecological system, based on the relationship between a society and its urban natural environment. In fact, during the year, different types of birds make use of these trees, due to their size and location. This is scientifically proven now,” emphasised Zminijietna – Voice the Left.

Zminijietna questioned “why these trees are not protected by ERA, and why the Local Council does not give its support so that these trees continue to serve as a natural habitat for migratory birds.”

On Monday evening social media was full of video showing the birds circling in a confused state as they came in to roost for the evening and found the trees gone.

NGOs, activists and Mosta residents are organising a protest tomorrow evening, Wednesday at 6.30pm in front of the Mosta Local Council.
