The juvenile loggerhead turtle rescued in Gozo last week has been operated on and all debris, including parts that were partially swallowed, have successfully been removed by the NTM Vet Dr Grupetta.

The turtle, which has been named Liam, is now in a tank recovering from his ordeal.

Nature Trust – FEE Malta Wildlife Rescue said that the turtle has been called Liam after the the Gozitan youth who every year raises awareness on marine debris through his swimming challenges from Malta to Gozo – Liam’s Swim – Keep the Sea Plastic Free.

Liam the swimmer, has also been supporting turtles under rehab who have encountered problems with marine debris around the Maltese Islands.

A big thanks to our Gozo and Malta rescue volunteers and our Xrobb L-Ghagin centre volunteers.

All the animals that are rescued by the team are protected species and cannot be harmed or captured. The Wildlife Rescue Team said that its volunteers have wildlife handling permits as well as training and equipment to help these creatures.
