On Sunday, 12 year old Gozitan Liam Daly set a new national record when he completed his fifth swim to raise awareness on – Keeping the Sea Plastic Free.

A huge achievement indeed and many congratulations to Liam and his supporters from the Gozo News team.

This new national record was confirmed by Malta Records – for the youngest person to have swum the 10 km between Malta and Gozo.

Liam in fact swam 11km from Anchor Bay, Popeye Village, in Malta to Mgarr ix-Xini in Gozo, in 3 hours and 45 minutes, in an effort to raise awareness about the ongoing plastic pollution in our world’s seas and oceans and the harm that it does.

Young Liam started out at 11.25am on Sunday morning from Anchor Bay towards Mgarr Ix-Xini Bay in Gozo, with his support swimmer for this year Johnny O Loughlin from Ireland.

Before reaching calmer waters as they approached Gozo, Liam had to battle against strong currents and jellyfish blooms for over 2 hrs.

A support boat from the Emergency Response and Rescue Corp with Carl Newman accompanied the swimmers across.

Donations collected will be officially presented to Nature Trust – FEE Malta.
