A restoration scheme available for Gozitan Local Councils and Administrative Centres has been launched by Gozo and Planning Minister Clint Camilleri. This year the scheme will also include alleys.

This scheme allows the Local Councils and Administrative Centres to identify and propose the restoration of small buildings or other immovable monuments that require preservation.

These include among others – statues, niches and other historical monuments, as well as other historical structures and sites, which have historical, architectural and artistic value.

“This year it was decided to expand the scheme further in order to reach wider aspects of the distinct Gozitan character. It was for this reason that with this scheme, apart from those elements of the Gozitan urban character, we are also adding the alleys. Another element that is an integral part of the urban fabric of Gozo, especially in the heart of the city or our villages,” stated Minister Camilleri.

This scheme, administered by the Eco-Gozo Directorate within the Ministry for Gozo and Planning will assist entities to carry out the interventions through a financial grant, up to a maximum of 85% of the related costs with the realisation of this project.

In cases where the intervention will be restoration on niches, statues or other historical monuments, the scheme will cover up to a maximum of €15,000. Where alleys will be regenerated, the interventions must meet several criteria including the use of sustainable material that respects the character, as well as measures that protect the environment, the allocation will rise to a maximum of €75,000.

The Ministry said that the scheme is administered and executed by the Eco-Gozo Directorate from the initial planning phase to the protection of the implementation of the proposed project. The selected projects must be carried out during the following time where the maximum allowable implementation is the year 2026.

Proposals must be submitted by Friday, the 3rd of May. For more information please click here.
