In his opening address of the Gozo Tourism Association’s 25th Annual General Meeting, GTA Chairman Mr Paul Scicluna stated that the recovery of tourism was also registered in Gozo, with increases coming both from the foreign and domestic markets.

However, the Chairman noted that the touristic sector feels that “the over-development in Gozo is killing the goose that lay the golden egg.”

He remarked that although during 2023 tourism in Gozo was back to the pre-pandemic arrivals, the sector still faces challenges that need to be addressed.

The Chairman highlighted another problem being encountered by tourism operators, which is the increases in operating expenses, which if not tackled properly can reduce the competitive edge of the destination.

Furthermore Mr. Scicluna also stressed the need to maintain the authenticity of the Gozitan touristic product, especially through a trained and skilled labour force.

The GTA’s Chief Executive Officer, Joe Muscat then delivered an audio-visual presentation on the performance of the Association during 2023. He gave an overview of the Gozitan touristic performance during last year, as well as the work and initiatives undertaken by the Association during the course of the past year 2023.

In his address the Chief Executive of the Malta Tourism Authority Mr. Carlo Micallef, provided an insight on the results obtained during the past year, whilst highlighting the importance of connectivity to Malta.

In this regard he mentioned the additional seat capacity that several airlines will be adding during 2024.

The Chairman of the Malta Tourism Authority Dr. Gavin Gulia, whilst complimenting the GTA emphasised the continuous collaboration and synergy between MTA and the GTA in promoting Gozo as a distinct destination.

The Annual General Meeting was also addressed by the Opposition Spokesperson Alex Borg, who whilst thanking GTA for its attainments, congratulated the Association for the 25 years of endeavours towards the Gozitan tourism sector.

Whilst highlighting the sterling work being carried out by the Malta Tourism Authority and the Directorate for Tourism and Economic Development, Dr. Borg expressed his vision that tourism on Gozo needs to be sustained more with specific measures targeted towards several niche markets.

The Annual General Meeting came to an end with the address of Minister for Gozo Clint Camilleri, who praised the Association’s achievements throughout the years, highlighting the remarkable milestone of 25 years since its inception.

The Minister added that the Government “must continue investing in the tourism industry, and that positive results obtained in 2023 motivates the perpetuation of increased efforts in enhancing the betterment of the tourism product.”

He stated that “the objective is to continue presenting Gozo as a distinct all-year round destination in order to preserve and augment a sustainable touristic product for the present and the future.”

Present for this meeting were also, the Director for Tourism and Economic Development, officials from the MTA Gozo Office, other distinguished guests and GTA members.
