The Gozo Business Chamber has welcomed with satisfaction the unanimous approval by Parliament of Gozitan Myriam Spiteri Debono as the next President of Malta.

In a statement on Friday, the Chamber said that “the process which preceded her selection shows a maturing political landscape.”

The unanimous consensus, which is a first following the constitutional amendments introduced in 2020, is extremely important for a person holding this Office, the Chamber said.

“The President is considered as a uniting figure who most often acts as the conscience of the nation, and who in times of crisis gives a sense of direction, said the GBC. “Myriam Spiteri Debono has consistently shown through her political career, to be able to do this with distinction.”

The Chamber went on to say that it “believes that the choice of a new President, after the constitutional amendments introduced in 2020, was an important testing point for our relatively young democracy, but one which was passed successful by both political parties. It shows that when political parties tackle issues beyond the political divide, important results can be achieved.”

The Chamber also congratulated Francis Zammit Dimech on being nominated as acting President.

Myriam Spiteri Debono was born in Victoria in 1952, she will be the third Gozitan President and the 11th President of the Republic.
